INDICATIONS:
The impact of palm oil on human health is controversial. Palm oil, like coconut or other tropical oils, carries a negative connotation due to its saturated fat content (about 50%). Despite the common perception of palm oil being unhealthy, it contains no cholesterol, and has less than 1. 5% of short-chain fatty acids that are harmful to health. Because it does not require hydrogenation, it does not contain trans fatty acids, which are associated with elevated cholesterol and heart disease. Palm oil contains over 500 ppm of carotenoids, which have cancer-fighting properties. Specifically, it contains 15 times more than carrot, and 300 times more than tomato. Red palm oil, a new food product, retains about 80% of the carotenoids in crude palm oil, which impart the characteristic color. Palm oil contains more tocopherols and tocotrienols than any other vegetable oil. These compounds are related to vitamin E, and have antioxidant and anti-cancer effects. One study showed that gamma tocotrienol had 3-fold greater suppressive effect on breast cancer cell growth than the popular breast cancer drug Tamoxifen.
